The post-Arsene Wenger era at Arsenal is about to kick off and the transfer window this year will probably be a crucial indication of the next season at Emirates as it might pan out. Unai Emery, the new boss at Emirates, has been a busy man, having completed a couple of signings already.
But he does not look totally satisfied with the options at his disposal and continues to be linked with some exciting stars for a move this summer. One such player they have now opened talks to sign is Caglar Soyuncu.
The Gunners used Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny as first choice CB pair last season while the likes of Per Mertesacker, Rob Holding and Calum Chambers acted as backups. While Mustafi failed to show enough composure out on the pitch in the last season, Koscielny’s injury might keep him out until the turn of the year. So they are in desperate need of adding an established defender to their side and Soyuncu is reportedly high on their wish list.
Having moved to Freiburg in 2016, Soyuncu took no time to establish himself in the first team and 24 league appearances in his first season at the club. He backed it up with some impressive performances last season, where he played a total of 33 games, including two UCL ties. He is now widely regarded as one of the best CBs in his country and has made 15 international appearances for the Turkish national side, making him an established star already.
Known for his keen understanding of the game, the 22-year old is a ball playing defender with great composure in possession. He is usually effective with his passing from the back and can also set up counter attacks with long balls, relieving danger from the back on a consistent basis. He is also quick to cut off the balls played into the box and is a forward-thinking player, who looks to keep his side on top with every opportunity.
He has to work on his aerial ability and the physicality of the English league might be tough for him to handle but at 22, he has great potential and is well worth his price tag.
Reports now claim that Sven Mislintat wanted Soyuncu even in his time at Borussia Dortmund but is now convinced that he is the right man for Arsenal. It is understood that the Gunners have opened talks for his signature and are ready to meet his valuation of £35m this summer.
