Arsenal have decided to cool their interest on Schalke 04 midfielder Max Meyer this summer. According to recent reports, the Gunners have ended their interest to seal a move for the German midfielder during this summer transfer period.
Some sources have recently claimed that both Arsenal and Liverpool have dropped out of the race to sign the Bundesliga talent. The 22-year-old will be out of contract at the end of this month with Marseille currently in pole position to land him. It is understood that the German ace’s high wage demands have been a major stumbling block for the English sides which is why they have decided to end their pursuit of the Schalke star.
With the Gunners set to miss out on Meyer, let’s take a look at three viable alternatives for Emery to consider during this ongoing transfer window.
Mateo Kovačić
The Croatian midfielder has been a solid presence for his national team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup so far but has struggled to get enough game time at Real Madrid over the past few seasons. The 24-year-old had made 36 appearances for the Galacticos last season and has 3 assists to his name across all competitions.
Although the Croatian midfield enforcer’s reputation has been built on his defensive capabilities yet he also has a knack for scoring and creating goals which make him a perfect fit for the Gunners. Kovacic will be an ideal asset under Unai Emery if the North Londoners can convince the Real Madrid star to make a move to the Emirates Stadium in the near future.
Arturo Vidal
The Chilean international has been in sensational form for Bayern Munich over the last few campaigns. However, the 31-year-old has often been sidelined due to injuries in recent times which has seen him make just 35 appearances for the Bundesliga giants last season. However, he still managed to score 6 times while also providing 2 assists in all competitions. Vidal is exactly the kind of player who can thrive under Emery at the heart of the Arsenal midfield if the Gunners decided to opt for his services in the summer.

Saúl Ñíguez
The Atletico Madrid midfielder has enjoyed an outstanding campaign last term and had put in some match-winning displays for the La Liga outfit during the course of last season. The 23-year-old had made 56 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side and has found the back of the net 6 times while creating 5 assists in all competitions. At 23, the Spaniard still has his best years ahead of him which the North London side could look to benefit from, in the coming years.
