Tottenham Hotspur will need to start winning trophies to establish themselves as a successful club in the English top flight. Mauricio Pochettino has certainly made the squad stronger every summer but has struggled to take the final step, time and again.
He has looked a busy manager this summer, trying to add some quality to his squad, to help his side compete with the best teams in Europe. However he is also in danger of losing a few of his first-team players and one such member who is now considering an exit is Mousa Dembele.
Having moved to England for the first time with Fulham in 2010, Dembele made an immediate impact on the country, turning into a regular for the Cottagers, putting in a number of impressive performances in the top flight.
He was snapped up by Spurs in 2012 and like at Fulham, he managed to establish himself in the first team within no time. The Belgian is one of the first names on the team sheet for Pochettino in his time at the club and the gaffer has relied on him to get Spurs out of trouble a number of times in the past.
The 30-year old is a gifted footballer, with a great understanding of the game. Pochettino compared him to Lionel Messi in the past and certainly rates him pretty highly. But he does not have too many years at the top of his game but reports now claim that he is not too keen to continue his career in the physically demanding Premier League.
He was one of the best midfielders in the league last season but it is now understood that he is considering offers from Inter Milan and a few clubs in China. Spurs will not stand in his way and have slapped a price tag of £20m, with just a year left on his current contract. But can they afford to lose him?
Dembele’s creativity in the middle of the park is crucial to Pochettino’s system at the club. His ability to turn defence into attack in the blink of an eye brought the best out of the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane, both of whom will definitely struggle without him.
He is also adept at dropping deep, making crucial interceptions, adding a balance to the side that will be dearly missed. Moreover, Pochettino will not find it easy to lure a player of similar calibre to the club this summer. So losing Dembele will be a huge blow for Spurs, and if they can, they should look to hold on to him for another season, even if it means that they will lose him on a free transfer next year.

Meanwhile, they can scout for a suitable replacement, and will have an entire year to do so. At the moment, they should do what it takes to keep Dembele at the club beyond this summer.
