Leeds United have finally cut the toxic chord with their managerial head, Paul Heckingbottom and are lining up an immediate replacement. This should hardly come as a shock to any of the Whites fans who has been left confused and frustrated after a horrific 2017/18 season.
Leeds finished in the 13th spot of the EFL Championship and were looking like the offbeat teams who deserved to get relegated rather than earn promotion to the top-flight. Heckingbottom barely made a scratch in terms of improvement after his appointment earlier this year. Thomas Christiansen’s obvious inefficiencies needed to be answered. However, the former Barnsley man was not the man to do so. He could not uplift the morale of the squad and get them back to winning ways.
While some of the problems might have been too obvious to the naked eye, most of them needed to be solved with an experienced coaching head. Plenty of players got injured, strikers were misfiring in every game, crippling suspensions for behavioural issues of some of the key players all played a part in Leeds’ bad season.
Andrea Radrizzani’s ambitious plans of taking the club back to Premier League football can still be achieved with a few key improvements to the current squad. First, he will need a competent managerial head and here are a few candidates he should definitely consider.
Marcelo Bielsa
The former Argentine and Chile head coach’s name has been linked with Leeds according to several media reports. Bielsa could be the necessary change that Leeds need at the moment from their past record of hiring young managers.
The 62-year-old has loads of experience in top-flight management and worked wonders with both the South American nations. He even led Athletico Bilbao to the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League final.
Graham Potter
We have all seen what the man can do with a club whose aggregate player’s wages are less than that of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil. Now imagine what he could do with the this young Leeds side if given the time to operate.
He is ambitious and has certainly earned a call-up to the big leagues. The Ostersunds FK boss is wanted by many and Leeds should definitely consider making an official approach for him.
