West Ham United reportedly received Manuel Pellegrini over the weekend for contract negotiations over the managerial position. The Hammers chose to not extend the contract of David Moyes despite managing a safe spot in the league table last season. It is understood that the club is planning an ambitious future in the Premier League which would require a title-winning manager of Pellegrini’s stature.
The 64-year-old head coach last managed Chinese Super League outfit, Hebei China Fortune and is ready to mark his return to the English top-flight. He was ushered out of the Manchester City doors two seasons back when Pep Guardiola got appointed as his replacement.
Pellegrini delivered a league title and 2 Carabo Cup trophies during his 3-year association with the club but never earned the praises he deserved. The Chilean finished his contract at the Etihad in classy fashion and departed for other prospects, leaving behind a highly talented City team.
He primarily earned his place in the managerial sphere by taking Villareal to the third spot of the La Liga in his debut season and helping the side qualify for the UEFA Champions League. He even took the Yellow Submarine to the Semi-Final stage of the 2005/06 competition, only to lose out to Arsenal.
His work at El Madrigal earned him a call-up to Real Madrid where he spent a single season in charge. Pellegrini, just like the Galacticos, was ambitious with his approach and signed Kaka from AC Milan that summer. He also brought Cristiano Ronaldo to the Santiago Bernabeu along with Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso.
Pellegrini led the Los Blancos to their highest ever point tally in the La Liga and still finished runners-up, behind their arch-rivals, Barcelona. This led to his sacking and getting replaced by current Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho.
Pellegrini took the disappointment right on his chin and went to work with Malaga in the succeeding season. There he developed a quality talent in Isco and led the team to the 4th spot of the Spanish top-flight with a record-breaking 58 points. He delivered Champions League football for the first time in the club’s history and took them to the quarterfinals in the next season, only to lose out to Borussia Dortmund.
The man is known to implement an exciting and yet efficient style of football onto the pitch. He has worked wonders with low-budget teams and has taken them to unforeseen heights.
