Tottenham Hotspur are vying for the signature of Espanyol’s versatile defender David Lopez. The centre-back has been instrumental in Espanyol’s season as they finished at a respectable eleventh spot. He helped his team to achieve 12 clean sheets and the 28-year-old is being eyed by Mauricio Pochettino.
Lopez has good ball playing abilities, which allows him to play the role of the defensive midfielder as well. Pochettino shares a good relationship with the Spanish outfit as he was their manager before and has also turned up for them as a player.
The defender missed just one game throughout their campaign and was the backbone of his side. Apart from Spurs, Newcastle United also seem to be interested in the defender but the north London club will certainly have an edge over them as they can offer the player Champions League football.
Pochettino’s team are coming close to becoming one of the Premier League heavyweights but they seem to crumble in crunch situations. They were knocked out from Europe despite being in control of the game and they must be wondering what they need to do to break their silverware drought.
Spurs can lose out on the likes of Moussa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld in the summer and they will have to bring in replacements for them. The 28-year-old Spaniard will certainly be a good addition to their squad and his versatility could also prove to be a boon for the North London club.
Spurs are in need of one or two experienced players who will keep calm in tough situations and bring the team through and the 28-year-old certainly ticks all those boxes. However, it remains to be seen that whether he will be able to adjust to the tempo and style of English football. The only other experience the player has playing outside of Spain is when he was part of Napoli from 2014-2016.

We have seen in the past Pochettino preferring players who are capable of playing from the back. That is the reason why he has used someone like Eric Dier in the centre back role as it allows him to dictate play from the defence. The signing of Lopez will certainly add more competition for places in the Spurs squad and he already seems like a player in the mould of Pochettino’s tactics and playing style.
