Reports claim that Newcastle United are among the interested parties who would like to sign RSD Espanyol midfielder, David Lopez. The 28-year-old’s name has come up on Valencia’s summer wishlist but Rafael Benitez and a host of other Premier League sides plan on putting up a good fight for his services. López contributed with one goal and one assist in his 43 appearances last campaign.
He is tied down to the La Liga outfit for another two seasons and is reported to have a release clause worth €40m. At first glance, the Magpies might look the other way but all of it depends on the accuracy of the reports.
López might be a quality option in the current market but his rumoured value comes nowhere close to justification. Then again, in the current market, no price is high enough. The Barcelona-born player has racked up 121 senior team appearances for his boyhood club, with whom he made his first start as a professional footballer.
López came out of the White and Blues youth academy only to be considered for the side’s B team. After making a few inconsequential appearances, he found an escape in another local club, Teressa where he made 31 league appearances.
The defensive ace had a poor first stint with Espanyol but on his return from Napoli, has looked impressive. Quique Sanchez Flores has converted him into a centre-defender and has been rewarded in his decision.
López is more than capable of formulating plays from the back. His passing range paired with his tackling and interception abilities makes him a prime quality defender in the La Liga. The Magpies could benefit a lot from his services next season. López might just be a starter if he makes the switch to St James’ Park. Benitez does have Florian Lejeune, Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark in his squad but the Lejeune and Clark have mostly been shifted around as a sporadic options.
Although Lejeune might have been impressive last termin a few matches but López could be a major upgrade. He is a leader and a fighter. He will be motivated to help Newcastle cement their spot in the English top-flight.

However, with the scarce resources in hand, Benitez is expected to look into more cheaper and realistic options. In no way will Mike Ashley hand over a €40m to sign one player.
