Manchester United are yet to sign a player ahead of the 2018/19 season as competition builds up for some of the high profile names. Currently Lazio man, Sergej Milinković-Savić is being valued at £87.5m (€100m) by the Serie A outfit since many other top-flight teams have also expressed interest in the 23-year-old.
This might just be the type of news that Manchester United could do without at the moment. The Red Devils finished 19 points behind Manchester City in the title race and are just coming off the 1-0 FA Cup final loss to Chelsea. Jose Mourinho has not delivered a single trophy this season and has been outsmarted by his longtime rival, Pep Guardiola.
A wave of disappointment has spread across Old Trafford and the Red Devils fans, which currently is wafting over the cloud of their bitter rivals, Liverpool making the UEFA Champions League, today. The Portuguese tactician needs to address a few key issues at the club in order to place a more improved threat on the league title and in the European competition.
The biggest issue to address is the defence. Mourinho always has been the one to implement a strong formidable backline in his management style. Almost everything centres around the team’s ability to hold off the opposition attacks and then hitting them on the counter.
While that might not the Portuguese’s tactics to the very T, it certainly is what us fans have come to expect from him. However, those philosophies are hard to execute when Chris Smalling and Phil Jones get tied up in one horror show after the other.
The duo has lacked the cutting edge and the consistency to really solidify the United defence, often making silly errors and costing their team severely. Eric Baily’s injury did not help and neither did Victor Lindelof’s summer arrival. The latter has failed to meet United’s standards and still has a couple of seasons of development ahead of him.
The midfield could also use some work but not talent wise. Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera have more than enough firepower to between themselves to fulfill every single role.
Since Marouane Fellaini has not extended his contract, one could consider a replacement from the summer market. But not worth €100m! Savic has proven to be a top-pedigree talent with his 14 goals and 9 assists the last term but United do not need him at the moment.

There is no need for them to pursue such a player unless they get rid of any of the first team options.
