Manchester United seem desperate to make new inroads in the transfer window and are likely to table a bid for the highly-rated French defender Raphael Varane. According to reports, they are willing to offer Real Madrid £62m for his services and Varane might leave if the Galacticos go after another centre-half in the summer, which will limit the Frenchman’s game time in the first eleven.
One can understand why Jose Mourinho is going after him as he has seen the French international develop from close quarters during his time with the Los Blancos. Varane has been the mainstay of Madrid’s defence along with the omnipresent Sergio Ramos. It will be interesting to see whether Zinedine Zidane will let his prized centre-back go to Manchester United even for such a high fee.
Mourinho will be looking to close the gap next season between his rival Pep Guardiola and him. Manchester City have been head and shoulders above everyone this season in the race for the Premier League title. However, the Portuguese mastermind has done well to finish second in the league compared to last season’s dismal performance and can still end the season with a silverware as his team are in the FA Cup finals.
If one looks at the current centre-back options at United, it is mediocre, to say the least. The likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are inconsistent and one doesn’t know which player might turn up on a particular day. The big summer signing, Victor Lindelof, has failed miserably and has been struggling to get used to the dynamics of English football. Marcos Rojo’s time has been plagued by injuries and he is often reckless in his challenges when he starts. Only stand out defensive option is Eric Bailly and Mourinho’s team has suffered when he has been out injured.
Varane will certainly be a big upgrade over most of the available options at United. His great strength is his ability to read the game and his electrifying pace. One often doesn’t see big centre-halves blessed with such pace and acceleration but Varane seems to be an exception. He is commanding at the back and can be the leader of the defence.

All these capabilities make him a great option to have in the heart of the defence and Mourinho will probably try everything to bring him at Old Trafford. However, from Real Madrid’s point of view, it will be foolish for them to let Varane go even if they are offered the quoted amount. He is till 25 and his best years are yet to come. He can easily go onto become one of the best in the wolrd in few years and Madrid should not listen to any offers regarding him.
