Manchester United are lining up a move for AC Milan centre-back Leonardo Bonucci this summer. According to recent reports, the Red Devils are planning to make a move for the Italian international when the transfer window opens in the summer.
The 31-year-old has endured a difficult year at the San Siro but has still managed to put in some solid performances for the Serie A giants during the course of this campaign which has not gone unnoticed. Some sources are now claiming that Jose Mourinho’s side will try to convince the Italian defensive ace to make a switch to Old Trafford in the summer transfer period. Recent reports have also suggested that Jose Mourinho considers the Milan centre-back as an ideal fit for his backline as he looks to strengthen his squad going into the new campaign.
However, his form this season has been inconsistent, to say the least, which will be a cause for concern. It is understood that Milan would look to make a profit, having spent €42m to seal a move for him from Juventus last summer. Bonucci has made 50 appearances for AC Milan this term across all competitions after becoming a regular feature in Gennaro Gattuso’s first-team. He has also managed to earn 77 international caps for the Italian national team during his career.
The Red Devils have ended their league campaign with an impressive tally of 81 points after playing 38 fixtures in the English top-flight. However, they still need to bring in a number of quality players during the summer transfer period in order to challenge Manchester City for the league title in the upcoming season.
The addition of Bonucci will undoubtedly bolster Mourinho’s defensive options ahead of the new season. United have an array of defensive talents such as Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo competing for a centre-back position in Mourinho’s first-team. The potential acquisition of Bonucci will definitely strengthen the Red Devils backline and add more competition for places within the United squad.

At 31, the Italian international still has a few years left in him to play at the top level which the Reds of Manchester could look to capitalise on, in the years to come. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Bonucci and whether he ends up plying his trade at the Manchester club in the next campaign.
