Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea winger Willian. The Brazilian signed for the West London club back in 2013 and has been an integral part of the Blues squad since. He has played 236 games for the club scoring 44 goals and creating another 39.
The story of Willian’s arrival to Chelsea was dramatic to say the least. He was a star player at Shakhtar Donetsk when he was being scouted by Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. He was all set to join the North London side before Jose Mourinho, who was in charge of Chelsea back then, intervened. The Portuguese boss pulled a fast one over Chelsea’s London rivals by stealing the signature of Willian.
It turned out to be a successful move as Willian has been instrumental in both of Chelsea’s title-winning seasons since joining the club. He was also the best player in Chelsea’s disastrous 2015-16 season when the club finished 10th in the league. The Brazilian international is a winger who is versatile enough to play on either wing or as a number 10 behind the front man.
Willian is fast on the ball, has a wicked turn of pace and can dribble past multiple players. He has a good shot on him, can build attacks and is an excellent set piece player as well. Moreover, he was a Mourinho favourite at Stamford Bridge owing to his high work rate which saw him track back every time Chelsea lost the ball.
Since the departure of Mourinho and the arrival of Conte, Willian’s place in the team has somewhat been disputed. He has constantly been on the first team fringes and has had to fight for his place with Pedro. Under Conte, Willian has been left out for a significant number of matches but his latest turn of form has seen the Brazilian reclaim his starting spot.
The player is set to turn 30 this summer and it is being reported that he is being pursued by Mourinho, who is now in charge at Manchester United. The Old Trafford outfit has a host of attacking players in Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard and the signing of Willian will definitely add more cooks than needed at the Theatre of Dreams.
