Heart of Midlothian FC may have to wait until August to find out about the future of Manchester United left-back Demetri Mitchell and whether he can return to Tynecastle for the next campaign. The English full-back has not played for the Scottish side since February due to a torn meniscus. However, he featured for Hearts in their match against Celtic on Sunday where they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Hoops courtesy of goals from Dedryck Boyata, Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair.
Mitchell will now be available for the final few games of this current campaign but Hearts will be hoping to secure his services for at least another season. The on-loan United youngster has just made 10 appearances for Hearts so far but is yet to find the back of the net. He signed for the Scottish Premiership side on a six-month loan deal from Manchester United during the January transfer window. However, his time at the Tynecastle Park has been plagued with injuries.
The 21-year-old wide man can benefit from playing regular football with the Gorgie-based outfit for another season. Although, only time will tell whether Jose Mourinho fancies keeping him at the Manchester club for the next campaign. It is believed that the Red Devils are yet to decide on whether they want Mitchell to take part in their two-week summer tour of America, which is set to kick off on July 19 in Arizona. In a recent interview, Hearts boss Craig Levein was quoted to have said, “United have been great,”
“We have provided real football for Demi, which has meant sometimes playing when he’s had niggles. Sometimes in the academies, they get wrapped in cotton wool a bit. The loan is good for getting experience of normal football situations.
“I would like to try and get him back next year. I’ve spoken to United about it. They have a lot of players at the World Cup, plus they have a tour in America. They might need players for that. Their manager might want a look at him. The difficulty with all of the on-loan players is getting to a position where we can get all three parties to agree on something.
“We’ve enjoyed having him, we want to keep him and he wants to stay. Man United are the ones who hold his registration so they have to want what we want. It might be that they need time to assess the situation, which I completely understand.”
Manchester United have the likes of Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind vying for a place in Mourinho’s first-team. It is highly likely that United will decide to loan the young defender back, especially considering his recent injury concerns. Mitchell can definitely flourish with another short-term move to Scotland as regular top-level football could take his game to the next level.
