Manchester United and Jose Mourinho will be looking to close the gap to their local rivals and look to mount a better title challenge next season. Their only chance of silverware this term ended when they lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea.
The pressure will now be on Jose Mourinho to deliver something big next season. They have played uninspiring football and they don’t even have a trophy to show for this year which supposedly is what Jose guarantees every season.
To change all that, the Red Devils will have to make a lot of inroad in the upcoming transfer market and it seems that they have zeroed in on Atletico Madrid‘s defensive ace Sime Vrsaljko. According to reports, negotiations are already underway and he could turn out to be the first signing of the summer at Old Trafford.
United will have to shell out £35m to secure his services which for a club like Manchester United shouldn’t be much of a worry. Vrsaljko is a typical Atletico Madrid defender and is imposing and powerful and seems to have great stamina which makes him a great asset down the right side of the defence.
The Croatian defender played a crucial part in Atletico Madrid’s season as they secured the Europa League title and finished runners-up in the La Liga. He featured 29 times in all competitions and managed 5 assists as well. He is going to play a crucial role for his national side Croatia in the upcoming FIFA World Cup where many are considering them the dark horses of the tournament.
A stellar performance in the upcoming World Cup could see his value go up and hence Jose Mourinho will probably want to secure the deal before he leaves for Russia.
The next season could be make or break for the Portuguese mastermind who has been termed a serial winner over the years. He is going to leave no stone unturned and will go at his transfer targets hard in the summer. The fans are losing patience over his uninspired and defensive style of play and things could get worse if they don’t get good enough recruitment in the transfer market.

United currently deploy the experienced Antonio Valencia down the right who also happens to be the club captain. He is an extremely hard worker but sometimes he is found wanting in defence and commits poor fouls which can cost his team dearly. One cannot blame him as he is traditionally a right-winger. The other option is Matteo Darmian who has hardly seen any game time this season and it is evident that Jose doesn’t rate him highly. Vrsaljko will certainly be a great option and he will fit in Jose Mourinho’s style of play.
