Liverpool are eager to make a move for Newcastle United centre-back Jamaal Lascelles this summer. According to recent reports, the Reds are looking to secure the services of the English defender during this summer transfer window. It is believed that the Magpies are set to demand a fee in the region of £30m for their prized asset.
The Derby-born defensive ace has put in a number of outstanding displays for the Tyneside club during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed. Some sources are now claiming that Jurgen Klopp’s side are eyeing a move for the Newcastle star in this post-season as the German manager looks to strengthen his options at Anfield ahead of the new season.
However, the Reds are not the only ones looking to sign him and will face stiff competition from the likes of Chelsea and Everton in pursuit of the English defensive ace’s signature. Lascelles had made 35 appearances for the Magpies last season and has 3 goals to his name in all competitions. He has also represented his nation, England at the youth level but was not included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup which is set to kick off in Russia next month.
The Reds of Merseyside ended their campaign with a heart-breaking loss at the hands of Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. However, there has been major signs of progress under Jurgen Klopp over the last few years. It is expected that the German boss will be looking to recruit some talented players in this ongoing transfer window so that his side is ready to compete for major trophies once again next term.
The addition of Lascelles will definitely bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season. The Merseyside club has the likes of Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, Virgil Van Dijk, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez competing for a place in Klopp’s starting XI. The potential acquisition of Lascelles will undoubtedly improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Liverpool squad.
At 24, the English talent still has his peak years ahead of him which the Reds could look to utilise in the coming years. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Lascelles and whether he ends up plying his trade at Anfield next season.
