Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Sampdoria star Lucas Torreira. The Reds are in competition with Serie A side Napoli over the signature of the player who has been extremely impressive this season.
Torreira is a part of the Uruguayan national team and will travel with the squad to the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup despite being only 22 years old. He is said to be on the radar of Liverpool who will want to sign him to strengthen their midfield.
The Reds have an excellent attack in place. Their famed trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have been excellent all season and scored a truck full of goals. Salah has been more prolific than ever before and is the joint highest goal scorer in Europe this season.
He has been simply untouchable and with Firmino and Mane next to him, the Egyptian has played well enough to be in contention for the Ballon d’Or. They have a promising back up in Dominic Solanke as well.
In the middle, they have plenty of attacking options in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can. They also have decent players like James Milner who can fill in multiple positions. Then comes the captain Jordan Henderson, who is the heart of the defensive midfield.
However, things are not as rosy as it would seem. Can is at the end of his contract, which he has not considered renewing so far and will become a free agent after this month. The transfer window is open and Can is free to negotiate with any team and can join them on a free transfer. The German leaving would be a big blow for Jurgen Klopp.
He is reportedly bringing in reinforcements in Naby Keita from Germany. Keita is a fast, athletic player with all the attributes to shine in England. Chamberlain and Wijnaldum are attacking midfielders and not exactly players who can defend well.
This would mean that with the loss of Can, Liverpool will need another player to buff up their numbers in the squad. The signing of Torreira will give them that. Moreover, the player is versatile enough to play anywhere in the middle of the park.

That would mean that Torreira could fill in as a holding midfielder in place of Henderson or as an attacking midfielder in place of Wijnaldum and Chamberlain. However, the youngster is unlikely to get a first team place and must be aware of the situation before he agrees to join the Reds.
