Liverpool are planning to make a move for Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira this summer. According to recent reports, the Reds are hoping to secure the German’s services when the transfer window opens in the summer. It is believed that Jurgen Klopp wants to land the 31-year-old midfielder as part of the same deal which will see Emre Can go to Juventus. Yes, we know the entire scenario is confusing as Can will be a free agent at the end of the season but the reports indicate that despite that, Liverpool will look to extract something out of Can going to Juventus, if the free transfer really takes place.
Can’s contract with the Merseyside club runs out at the end of the current season. Some sources have already claimed that the Bianconeri have been long-term admirers of the Liverpool midfielder and are looking to seal a move for him in the summer transfer period. Recent reports have also suggested that Juve has held negotiations with Can but a deal is yet to be finalised. However, during negotiations, it was brought to the Reds’ attention that Sami Khedira could be available this summer.
The German midfielder signed for Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer of 2015. He has made 38 appearances for the Italian side this season, scoring 9 goals while grabbing 7 assists in all competitions. Khedira has previously won the La Liga and the UEFA Champions League during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium so he knows what it takes to be a winner.
The Merseysiders have managed to book their place in the Champions League final when they managed to grind out a 7-6 aggregate win over AS Roma last week and will now clash heads with Real Madrid later this month. However, the Reds suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat away at Stamford Bridge versus Chelsea in their last league encounter which means that they would need to secure a win versus Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the season to ensure Champions League football for the upcoming campaign.
The potential acquisition of Khedira will undoubtedly bolster Klopp’s midfield options ahead of the new season. Liverpool have the likes of Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Georginio Wijnaldum and James Milner vying for a place in Klopp’s first eleven with the impending arrival of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig this summer. The addition of Khedira will definitely improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Reds squad.
