Since the signing of Jeremy Mbakogu from Carpi FC 1909 is almost done, Leeds United have now turned their attention to another Serie B talent, Leo Stulac. The 23-year-old plays in the central midfield position for Venezia and for the Slovenian national team. He has been capped 32 times by the U17, U18, U19 and U21 sides.
Stulac has appeared in 20 games for the Italian outfit this campaign and has managed to chip in with 6 goals and 4 assists. Not too shabby for a midfielder who operates from deep. He was one of Filippo Inzaghi’s acquisitions two seasons back and has ever since racked up 39 senior team appearances.
This campaign has been somewhat of a breakthrough for Stulac, who only got to see the majority of the pitch in the latter half of the season. He has been impressive creatively and in driving the team’s midfield.
Stulac started his professional career with his hometown club, FC Koper, making his debut at only 16 years of age. He won both the Slovenian Cup and the Slovenian Supercup in the 2014/15 season and represented the side in the UEFA Europa League stage, registering 100 caps to his name.
He is still young and is developing into a prime central midfielder. He has been crucial in Venezia’s run for the 5th spot of the Italian second division this campaign, something Leeds would like to replicate in the Championship next term.
The Peacocks underwent a horror of a second-half campaign which saw them drop down all the way from the playoff spots to the 13th place in the league table. The eventual drop from grace was embarrassing and highly critique-worthy.
Even with the flaws in both managers, Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom, it seems like their recruitment policy has not exactly been the best over the recent years. Most of their purchases have failed to meet required standards while some of their best players have been lost to rivals for merely nothing.
Andrea Radrizzani and the Elland Road fans are at a loss to see their side crumble when it mattered the most this season. They need a brand new path with a new set of tools to achieve their goals. Stulac could be an important cog in that well-oiled machine, obviously implemented by someone other than Heckingbottom.

Let us hope that United figure out a way to get a winning team together by August to finally mark their spot in next year’s Premier League campaign.
