Not every keeper gets the chance to move to Old Trafford at the age of 14. That was, however, the case with Dean Henderson of Manchester United. The youngster was with Carlisle before being snapped up by Sir Alex Ferguson’s scouts.
At the time, Carlisle’s head of youth Eric Kinder admitted the kid was a special talent: “They are a massive club and you probably get one chance at signing for a set up like that. We can’t really say no, but I would have loved to have kept him. I think he’s probably the best young goalkeeper that I have ever worked with and it has been a pleasure to watch him.”
Since then, however, the career of the player has not turned out as expected. He has been unable to break into the first team despite being heavily talented and he has had to settle for bench roles or go out on loan.
Henderson was a part of England’s U-20 World Cup winning squad during last summer. He is currently playing on loan with League One side Shrewsbury Town. Henderson’s good form helped Shrewsbury go on an unbeaten run to the top of the League One standings earlier in the season.
Henderson is currently a part of United’s loaned out group of players. Although the club sees great potential in the keeper and wants to retain him as a future first-team player, Henderson himself is caught in two minds.
His current contract expires at the end of the current season and he is unsure whether or not he wants to renew it. His dilemma has not been helped by the fact that the 20-year old has attracted a great amount of interest from various clubs across England.
It now seems that Bristol City wants the man who will be available for £1m this summer. The Robins will need a new custodian in place after Luke Steele’s departure. Their current number one Frank Fielding has also been under the scanner due to his bad performances.

This has led to the situation that might see the Manchester United goalkeeper heading to Bristol City. At Bristol, he is likely to get the number one position in goal and that will help him develop more. Moreover, the player, should he go back to United, is obviously unlikely to get a regular first team place with David De Gea still around.
