Back in the month of March before Arsene Wenger had announced his decision to retire, regarding Jack Wilshere’s contract situation at the club, he had said, ‘I can only reassure him that I want him to stay,’ Wenger told beIN Sport. ‘We make him a proposal, after that you have to accept Jack is at an age where he will have offers from somewhere else.’
‘Personally I put my weight in for him to stay and push him to stay. I think he’s an Arsenal man. [AC Milan manager Gennaro] Gattuso said the other day he has the technique of a Spanish player and the character of an English player. I think it’s well judged. That’s why you want him to stay at the club.’
‘But as well you know Jack has gone through situations where he was long-term injured and you hope basically that in the next three to four years he will be injury free and we will see the real Jack Wilshere.’
A month later, the situation at the club has changed. The Frenchman has announced that he will leave at the end of the season and this could make it difficult for the Gunners to convince Wilshere to stay back. Wenger for his part was positive, however.
“It looks positive for the club,” he told a press conference. “I am not involved in negotiations. But I’m still in touch with Jack if he wants my advice.
“I am convinced, like I was always, that his future is here. It was always my wish and I think it will happen, yes.”
As for Wilshere himself, this is what the player had said a few days back. “We are still in the same position really. Not much has changed. We are still talking.”
“Obviously the boss has left which has changed things a little bit because I don’t know who is going to be the manager next year and that can change things. But we are still talking and I am hopeful and the club is hopeful we can get something done.”
This would mean that Arsenal do have a chance of tying him down but might have to provide with a solid deal that will convince him to stay beyond doubt. The player has grown up at the club and is an Arsenal man through and through. There have been tough situations that saw him lose his place in the squad but whenever he has donned the famous Red and White jersey of the North London club, it has looked like an eternal love story between the man and the institution.
