Jerome Boateng has revealed that he could leave Bayern Munich this summer. According to recent reports, the German defender could make a move away from the Allianz Arena during this summer transfer period with both Manchester United and Chelsea ready to pounce on his signature.
The Bundesliga talent can be considered as one of the best centre-backs in world football. In a recent interview, Boateng weighed in on his future and was quoted to have said,
‘Foreign counties are always interesting. You do not have many chances,’
‘Everyone has to decide for himself whether he wants to gain experience again.
‘I’m a different age now than I was at Manchester City and now at the point of thinking about it again.
‘Of course, it’s very difficult to get away from Bayern. That would not be a decision against Bayern, I’ve been feeling very well in Munich for years.’
The 29-year-old defender has made 31 appearances for Bayern Munich last season and has 2 goals and 4 assists to his name in all competitions. He has previously played for Manchester City in English football and knows the Premier League well.
With Boateng’s recent revelation throwing his future at Munich in doubt, let’s take a look at three potential destinations for him in the English top-flight.
Chelsea
The Blues are in need of a top quality centre-back especially after the form of Gary Cahill let them down on a number of occasions last season. The West London club has two young centre-backs in the form of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger. Hence, they should bolster their backline by adding someone experienced like Boateng as he can definitely help them get back into the top 4 next year.
Manchester United
The Red Devils have a top-class keeper in David De Gea but their defenders have been inconsistent over the past few years. There are still question marks over Phil Jones and Chris Smalling while Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof have struggled to cope with the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League. Hence, adding someone like Boateng will undoubtedly improve their backline and add more competition for places within Jose Mourinho’s squad.
Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs have coped well without the services of Toby Alderweireld for the majority of last season but they still need to bring in a new centre-back to replace him this summer. Hence, a move for Boateng makes sense as he has the defensive talents to get the best out of Davinson Sanchez. The potential central defensive duo of Boateng and Jan Vertonghen could be one of the best in the division if the North Londoners can lure the German to ply his trade at White Hart Lane next term.
