Barcelona have cooled their interest in Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer. According to recent reports, the Catalans are prepared to drop out of the race to sign the Serbian international. It is also understood that Manchester United have shown interest in securing his services when the transfer window opens in the summer.
This recent development of the Catalans dropping out of the race will be a big boost for the Red Devils in pursuit of the Serie A sensation’s signature. Some sources are claiming that Barca might be put off by his massive price-tag of €80m which means that it will be an advantage for Jose Mourinho’s team as they look to strengthen their squad in the off-season.
However, it is also being reported the Milinkovic is being chased by a whole host of clubs which includes Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Chelsea along with Manchester United after he put in a number of outstanding performances for Lazio this season. Milinkovic-Savic has featured in 45 matches for the Italian side this term, scoring 13 goals and grabbing 9 assists in all competitions. He has also earned two international caps for the Serbian national team so far and has a lot of potential to be a future star in European football.
The Reds of Manchester are comfortably sitting in the second spot in the league standings with a tally of 77 points after Gameweek 36. Mourinho needs to bring in some quality players in the summer transfer period in order to close the gap to Manchester City and mount a realistic title challenge next season.
The addition of Milinkovic-Savic will undoubtedly bolster Mourinho’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign. United already have the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Scott McTominay and Marouane Fellaini vying for a place in Mourinho’s starting eleven. The potential acquisition of Milinkovic-Savic will improve their squad significantly and add more competition for places in the Red Devils first-team.
