Leeds United have secured the services of Oriol Rey in an improved, long-term contract after the young Spaniard penned a new deal to commit his future at the Elland Road-outfit. According to recent reports, the Spanish starlet has put pen to paper on a fresh contract which will keep him at the West Yorkshire club until the summer of 2020.
The Leeds youngster arrived at Elland Road from Barcelona last summer and has been a regular feature in the Peacocks Under-23 team under the stewardship of Carlos Corberan this season. He has made 8 appearances for the West Yorkshire outfit in the UEFA Youth League and has been one of their most integral members in the competition.
However, he is yet to break into the Leeds manager Paul Heckingbottom’s first-team plans so far in this campaign. Rey graduated from the famous La Masia academy and has massive potential to become a future star in European football. Only time will tell whether the Peacocks can retain his services for the long-run and get the best out of him in a few years time.
Heckingbottom’s team have ended their league campaign in the 13th spot with a total tally of 60 points after 46 league matches. They are in dire need to build for the future as they look to earn a promotion back to the top tier of English football next term.
Retaining some of their best talents could go a long way in helping them challenge for the league title in the coming years but for players such as Rey, it is extremely important to get regular first-team experience so that they can cut the mustard at the top level. The Peacocks have done well to keep hold of him for the time being and if he can shine in the future years, the decision will turn out to be a masterstroke. The Spaniard is highly versatile and can operate in a number of different positions across the pitch. The 20-year-old primarily operates as a central midfielder but can also play in central defence which makes him a valuable asset for Leeds United.

At 20, he still has his peak years ahead of him which the Peacocks could look to utilise in the years to come. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Rey and whether he ends up fulfilling his potential at West Yorkshire in the next few seasons.
