West Brom, who are having a dismal season this year, are expected to go down to the Championship. They are currently 10 points off the safety mark. With them being expected to go down this season, they can lose some of their key players as they will like to play for a Premier League club rather than a Championship team.
One such player can be Gareth Barry. The veteran midfielder has managed to make 29 appearances for the baggies and that has triggered an optional 12-month extension having played 25 times this season. The experienced midfielder is the most capped player in the Premier League. His life at West Brom started off well under Tony Pulis as West Brom were expected to survive in the Premier League.
But after Tony Pulis’s departure, West Brom’s season has spiralled down further. Alan Pardew wasn’t able to inspire his teams and as a result, they are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.
Barry was recently involved in a controversy as he was named in one of the four quartets who allegedly stole a taxi in Barcelona. Barry has been known as a thorough professional and this allegation was unlike Barry and as a result, his reputation was slightly dented after the incident.
After Alan Pardew left the club with mutual consent, Darren Moore has been named as the caretaker manager until the end of the season. The club is in dire straits currently as they have managed just 3 wins in the Premier League this season.
West Brom established themselves as a defensively solid side under Tony Pulis but this season they have struggled at the back. They were a team who were defensively organised and used to be tough to break down. For goals, they used to rely heavily on various set pieces and usually used to score through corners and long free kicks.
Gareth Barry, who joined West Brom from Everton for an undisclosed fee was supposed to shield the back four and provide defensive stability. He has been found out on quite a few occasion this season. He is already on the wrong side of the thirties(37) and one can see that his abilities are waning. Only time will tell whether he will extend his optional contract with the Baggies. With them being pretty much certain to be demoted to Championship, Barry might look to join a Premier League club but at this point in his career, there might not be many suitors for him.
