Tottenham Hotspur are planning a surprise move to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who is currently out on loan at Aston Villa, this summer. According to recent reports, Pochettino’s Spurs side are on the lookout for a new backup keeper and the Red Devils shot-stopper fits the bill perfectly.
It is believed that Tottenham goalkeeper Michel Vorm might leave the North London club at the end of the season in search of greener pastures which could pave the way for Spurs to go all out to sign Johnstone when the transfer window opens in the summer. He is currently enjoying a successful loan spell at Villa Park but his contract at Old Trafford runs out at the end of the campaign.
The 25-year-old will be a free agent soon and is all set to depart the Manchester outfit in this off-season after going out on loan to play for seven different clubs during his time in the North-West of England. Some sources are now claiming that Johnstone will face a massive dilemma of whether to join a big club to become their no. 2 option or sign for a club who can potentially provide him with regular first-team football next term.
Tottenham Hotspur are sitting in the 5th position in the league rankings with a tally of 68 points in 34 matches. They suffered a disappointing FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United on Sunday which indicates that the North Londoners are far from a finished product. Pochettino needs to recruit well in the summer to have any chance of mounting a realistic title challenge next season.
Johnstone has featured regularly for the Villans this season and has caught the eye with some solid displays in the Villa goal during the course of the campaign which has not gone unnoticed. The addition of the English keeper will undoubtedly bolster Pochettino’s goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign.

Johnstone has made 43 appearances for Villa this season, conceding 40 goals while keeping 19 clean sheets in the English Championship. The current Tottenham side have the likes of Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm vying for a place in the Spurs first-team. The potential acquisition of Johnstone will definitely add more competition for places within Pochettino’s squad. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Johnstone and whether he ends up making a switch to North London in the summer.
