Tottenham Hotspur are among the host of Premier League sides who are monitoring Sporting Lisbon winger, Gelson Martins. The 22-year-old has really hit the spotlight this season with his 13 goals and 12 assists in 43 appearances.
It would not come as a shock if he makes a summer exit for another one of those £50m deals, judging by the talent he has showcased at Portugal. Martins has electric pace under his boots and a bag of skills to go with it. On the dribble, he is a constant threat from the flanks and has a keen eye for the goal.
A speedy wide man is always welcomed in modern day football and Martins could be Tottenham’s golden ticket to a much improved 2018/19 season. They just lost out to Manchester United in the FA Cup Semi-Finals by 2 goals to nil – another season without a trophy.
Mauricio Pochettino has been picking up the scraps and has been demoted to another campaign with the similar saying – “Next season will be our season”.
However, let us not stray too far away from all the good that has come out of the 2017/18 season.
We are all aware of the moves Pochettino has had to make in order to turn his team into title challenging status. The Argentine has already allocated a strong group of world class players and has reinvented the team’s top-flight pedigree, both in England and in the continental stage.
Tottenham currently sit in the top four of the Premier League but will have to fight their way through the last 3 games of the season in order to keep their place. Chelsea are not too far behind after last weekend’s 1-1 draw to Brighton And Hove Albion.
Tottenham overall had a strong showing in the Champions League by overcoming Real Madrid to the top of the group stage but could not hold out against an experienced Juventus in the knockout stages.
Just one slip-up in the 2nd Leg of the Round of 16 stage, saw the Serie A giants progress to the next round of the competition. Heartbreaking at the moment but a moment to learn a thousand lessons from.
Now Pochettino has been made aware of the demands one needs to go through in order to win against the best. He will be looking to build on this ‘success’ and start matching the likes of the European elites next season.
The best way to do that is to take note of both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho’s tactics and strengthen the squad as much as possible. Tottenham are stacked thin compared to the rest and have suffered earlier in the season because of that.

Gelson Martins could be a wonderful addition to complete the whole offensive setup. Obviously, Harry Kane and Dele Alli are confirmed starters. But with Martins in the squad, serious pace could be infused on the wings and Christian Eriksen will have another player who will be able to pick up on his clever passes.
