What a story it has been for Sunderland this season! The Black Cats slipped into the second division of English football having been relegated from the top tier after their dismal performance. Sadly, they once again are set to face the same fate at the end of this term with their relegation to the League One being just a matter of days.
Amidst the conundrum, the Wearside club faithful are thunderstruck by another shocking news. The club has changed hands. This has led to far-reaching consequences, including the release of Sunderland’s Welsh manager, Chris Coleman, with immediate effect.
The 47-year old took charge at the club in November 2017 after the Black Cats parted ways with the then manager Simon Grayson. He left his job as the manager of the Welsh national team, who performed incredibly in the Euro 2016 campaign and made to the knockout rounds, bowing out to the eventual champions Portugal after a valiant fight.
Wales, however, were not able to make it to the World Cup in Russia and Coleman sought a new challenge to delve into at the time. Sunderland, who were already staring at relegation at that time, were happy to see a manager of his stature take over the reins. His employment, however, was far from the promised miracle for the Wearside club and they were eventually relegated from the Championship after their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Burton on April 21st.
Now, as the Stadium of Light prepares to welcome their new owners and a new manager, who will hopefully guide them to glory in the League One, here are a few clubs where Coleman can resurrect his career.
Everton
Though Coleman might not be the first choice for the top job at the Merseyside club with their owner Farhad Moshiri looking for an able replacement for Sam Allardyce, the Welshman can be an astute inclusion for the Toffees. Everton had a nightmare of a season and found themselves in the bottom three at one point, which saw them part ways with the then manager Ronald Koeman. Though Allardyce has done a commendable job in helping them revive their season and finish at a respectable position, it seems the Iranian businessman is not that pleased with him and that is where Coleman’s name might be considered.
West Brom
With relegation almost certain, the Baggies are currently without a manager and are playing under the tutelage of Darren Moore, their caretaker boss. Though Moore has tried his best and helped the side to get inspiring results against biggies like Manchester United and Liverpool, it is too little too late for them and the appointment of a new manager looks imminent.
Coleman has rich experience of coaching in English football and can be considered for the top job at the Hawthorns as they prepare for life in the Championship.
Southampton
The Saints are also having a tumultuous season and are struggling to stay afloat in the top tier. Mark Hughes is trying his level best to help them survive the relegation scare but might fall short of the required points to keep their place in the Premier League. If they are relegated and if Hughes decides to leave the club, his compatriot Coleman might be an instant choice for the South coast club to take the reins and lead them back to the top flight.
