Chelsea may have lifted the Premier League trophy last season but their business in the summer transfer window last year was less than impressive and it has shown in their run to the business end of the current season. The Blues might struggle to finish in the top-4 and Antonio Conte’s job is certainly on the line, come the end of the season.
They will have to work really hard in the upcoming transfer window and will be tempted to offload players who have not been effective this season and one such player, who is partly responsible for Chelsea’s troubles at the moment is Spaniard Alvaro Morata.
Having joined the Blues last summer in a club record deal, Morata was expected to replace Diego Costa and his goals in the first team. However, he has not been able to find any rhythm, which has been further hampered by injuries.
So it does not come as a surprise that he has managed just 13 goal and five assists, in 38 games in all competitions for the club. Conte had to bring in Olivier Giroud to add some goals to the side and will be active in the transfer market this summer in search of another striker. This will push Morata down the pecking order and reports suggest Chelsea might even be tempted to sell him at the end of the season.
The Italian manager recently revealed that Morata is in the best shape he has been since moving to England and felt that the last month and a half of the season and the World Cup will see the best of him. But it is understood that the Blues will be ready to offload him if the chance arises.
And The Express have now run a story claiming that his former club Real Madrid are interested in his signature. Having spent five years at Bernabeu in two stints, Morata will be tempted to move back to the Spanish capital while German giants Bayern Munich are also keeping an eye on him. So should Chelsea sell?
Though the loss of form will reduce Morata’s price, the 25-year-old is still one of the best strikers in Spain at the moment and is crucial for their chances in Russia. He can still hit the levels he has promised before and will be a huge coup for the most club.
But Chelsea have not been able to get the best out of him and if Conte is given another year at Stamford Bridge, there is little point in sticking with Morata for another year.
But if Conte is allowed to leave, Morata still has something to prove in the league and deserves another chance in London. Where do you think Morata will play next season?
