Reports continue to spindle around Tom Cairney’s probable exit from Fulham next summer. Newcastle United are the latest suitors in the £20m chase for the Championship playmaker with Leicester City also in the hunt.
Cairney has made a name for himself in the second division of English football. The Lillywhites captain has picked up 4 goals and 4 assists this season after hitting an injury snag earlier in the season. He was already heavy tied to a host of Premier League outfits but Fulham refused to sell their leader and harm their chase for promotion.
Cairney has accounted for 25 of Fulham’s goals in his 125 appearances for the club while also assisting a further 23. Ever since his arrival at Craven Cottage, Fulham has been successful in making a strong case for Premier League promotion given the offensive talent Cairney brings to the table. The 27-year-old is contracted to the side till the summer of 2021 and just recently has received a nomination for the EFL Championship Player Of The Season award. This could prove to be a major stumbling block in the summer window especially if Fulham do succeed to making the top-flight jump.
The Cottagers are currently in the 3rd spot of the points table, 5 points behind the automatic promotion spot. Their impressive run of form since the start of the year has seen them almost secure a top-6 finish for the season.
Slaviša Jokanović’s men have won 4 of their last 5 league fixtures and are coming off a 2-0 triumph over Leeds United. They still have 6 games to bridge the gap behind Cardiff City and hope to escape the uncertainty of a playoff battle.
Newcastle United are enduring a tough battle in the Premier League but have opened up a favourable 7-point gap over the relegation spots. They are well poised to survive the season in English top-flight and further additions are necessary to build on that success.
Rafael Benitez’s Janaury transfers have paid off brilliantly in recent times. Both Kenedy and Martin Dubravka have secured a first-team spot and are successfully delivering as per requirements.

Benitez did face a lot of push-back from the Magpies ownership back in January and somehow managed to work around the financial constraints. His job will need to be tied for a longer period of time and other than signing a permanent contract, the best way to do so is by showing intent and allowing him to make further additions.
