George Hirst is well set to leave Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the current season. The talented teenager plays as a striker but has found himself frozen out of the team at Sheffield. His refusal to sign a new long-term deal saw the club lock out Hirst from playing football on any level.
The striker is quietly biding his time and it is expected he will move away as soon as the transfer market opens. Hirst will have come to the end of his contract by then and will be a free agent to sign up. His talent has earned him quite a reputation with many clubs interested in his signature.
Hirst has played for England on various national levels and is the son of the legendary David Hirst, the former Owls striker. George, like his father, plays as a striker and is ready to move on to bigger and better things at the age of 19.
He is reportedly being pursued by a number of clubs including Premier League teams like Newcastle United, Leicester City and Manchester United. The player will no doubt become a star in the future given his talent but there could be a twist in the story yet.
Hirst’s attitude of accepting not to play rather than sign a new contract shows the kind of lack of professionalism that comes with the game today. Agents have influenced these young kids to not respect clubs as the chief decision makers on the future, While the motive is good, the means to achieve it is definitely not.
What Hirst has done at Sheffield could well become a pattern and a trend for the future as well. He may well pull a similar stunt in the future to design a move to an even bigger club thereby rendering that club’s investment on him as pointless.
Coming to the topic at hand, Newcastle United are heavily interested in him. The Magpies recovered from their relegation two years ago by returning to the English Premier League this year. They played well and fought their way back to the top tier of English football thanks to their coach Rafa Benitez.

However, Benitez has been given next to nothing in terms of fresh budget to sign new players and to survive in the Premier League without money is impossible. Hence the Spaniard will have to ensure he gets to poach the free stars at least if he is serious about helping his team maintain their Premier League status for the next few years, starting with George Hirst.
