According to recent reports, Newcastle United have been sensationally linked to their derby rivals player Joel Asoro. The report also said that Newcastle had sent scouts to keep tabs on Asoro. He is just 18 and will be out of contract this summer. The black cats have offered him a new deal and will be hoping that their young asset signs them. But with Sunderland on the verge of relegating to League one, the young forward might look for a way out to bigger and better clubs for a better future.
Sunderland’s boss Chris Coleman has warned the young star that leaving Sunderland won’t be the best option for him as he won’t be getting regular playing time. Apart from Newcastle, Arsenal and Watford also seem to be interested in the young Swede.
Asoro was born in Stockholm to Nigerian parents and could be eligible to play for Nigeria as well. Though he has represented Sweden at the u-17 level. He made a Premier League appearance for Sunderland in 2016 when he came from the bench in the last 10 minutes against Middlesbrough. He was promoted to Sunderland’s first team on the back of good performances for their u23 side and partly due to lack of backup option in Sunderland’s attacking department.
Asoro can play as lone striker and has good pace and a ferocious right foot. His hold up and link up play is also up to the mark and he can be partnered with another striker up front. Sunderland is trying hard to keep their man and understandably so but it will be tough to hold the player as the team is on the verge of relegating to League one. Asoro has scored twice in 25 appearances this season. He might not be having a stellar season as far as goal scoring is concerned but he certainly looks good enough to play for a Premier League club.
Newcastle United have done exceedingly well in the Premier League lately as they have lost just once since January. Their good results have come on the back of some solid defensive performances. Benitez as a manager is known for his defensive organisation and it has been tough for other teams to break down this Newcastle side.
Their striking options- Gayle and Joselu haven’t impressed a lot in this season and Newcastle might end up recalling Mitrovic for next season from loan. Signing Asoro could be a good move for them and the player as well as he will be harbouring dreams to play in the top flight football instead of League One or Championship.
