Manchester United, who are on the lookout for attacking talents this summer, have turned their eye on the highly rated Sheffield Wednesday striker George Hirst. According to reports, Manchester United are currently favourites to sign the Owls starlet.
George Hirst is the son of former Sheffield Wednesday legend David Hirst, who scored 149 goals in 358 appearances, which made him a fan favourite. He had an 11-year-long stint at the club before he joined Southampton. It was said that Sir Alex Ferguson was once keen to bring him to United. Like his father, George Hirst plays up front for the Owls but it seems that he is willing to move to the Premier League for a better future. According to reports, the likes of Newcastle and Everton are also keen to sign the English teenager.
Manchester United have struggled for goals this season and they might be on the lookout for some young offensive players. Manager Jose Mourinho has also indicated that the current squad needs a bit of a shakeup to compete for the Premier League title next season.
United currently rely heavily on the Belgian striker Lukaku for goals and when he has been out injured, Marcus Rashford has filled in the role of playing up front. Rashford has done his job well but he is more suited to play on the left. He gets a bit isolated when he plays as a lone striker as he is not that good with his hold up play. He likes to run at defenders and that is when he is at his most dangerous.
With Hirst coming in United they can have a backup striker to Lukaku. Though he hasn’t made a lot of the first-team appearance for Sheffield Wednesday, it’s at the international stage where he has shined for England in various age bracket tournaments. He scored a Hattrick on his debut at the u-19 level playing against Poland. Hirst is an out and out striker and can be termed as a traditional number 9. He is good in the air as he stands tall at 6’2″. He has decent speed given his height and is strong on the ball and his hold up play is quite good. Hirst can operate as a lone striker or can play along with a partner up front.

At United, he will most probably be confined to the bench but can improve playing at a big club like United. Only time will tell whether he joins United as he can look to other clubs as well if he is assured of starts there.
