Current Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich suffered a huge blow when key defender Jerome Boateng suffered an injury in their recent game against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. The highly-rated centre-back was diagnosed with a muscular injury, which will keep him on the sidelines for about six weeks, as per reports.
This will be a huge blow for Bayern Munich, who will still have to overcome their 2:1 deficit against Real Madrid in the second leg in order to book their tickets for the UCL finals.
However, Bayern might face an even more complex situation.
The German international, who is regarded as one of the best defenders in world football at the moment, is highly expected to leave Allianz Arena at the end of this season.
The former Manchester City defender has struggled with injuries and lack of game time this season, which has reportedly infuriated the player. In addition, new signing Niklas Sule’s excellent form at Bayern hasn’t helped his cause either.
According to latest reports, Premier League giants Manchester United are keen to sign the German international as Jose Mourinho aims to further strengthen his side’s defence this summer. Jerome Boateng has been identified as an ideal candidate to replace the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, both of whom are highly expected to leave the club this summer.
In fact, in a recent interview with the Socrates magazine, the defender shed light regarding his future, stating:
“I’ve experienced everything at FC Bayern, and I am slowly coming to a point where I must answer myself certain questions.”
“What are the goals I have not reached yet? Do I, time and time again, want to prove myself at the same club with the same pre-conditions?’
“Those are not necessarily classic questions regarding the career, but vital questions and, in the end, questions that drive people.” – he added.
With Jose Mourinho already keen to recruit a high-quality defender in the upcoming summer transfer window, Jerome Boateng perfectly fits the mould. The 29-year-old can not only help Manchester United strengthen their fragile-looking defensive unit but also add an extra dimension to their flawed build-up from the back.
His leadership abilities are also perfect as Manchester United look to pose a strong threat to their noisy neighbours and recently crowned Premier League champions Manchester City next season.
Therefore, keeping hold of the defensive superstar might prove to be a tough proposition for the Bavarians this summer. It will be interesting to see how his transfer saga shapes up in the future.
