Manchester United have received a big boost in pursuit of Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng this summer. According to recent reports, the Red Devils are looking to secure the services of the German international when the transfer window opens in the summer.
It is believed that United boss Jose Mourinho is on the lookout for new defenders in the upcoming summer transfer period with Boateng one of the players on his wish-list. The likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof has failed to impress the Special One during the course of this campaign which could mean that they will be shipped out of Old Trafford this summer. Some sources are now claiming that United will try their best to land Boateng in the off-season to try and aid their cause of mounting a realistic title challenge in the Premier League next season.
Boateng has featured in 31 matches for Bayern Munich this season, scoring 2 goals while creating 4 assists in all competitions. He has previously experienced English football during his time at Manchester City which indicated that he might not take much time to adapt to the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League.
In a recent interview, Boateng addressed his future and was quoted to have said, “I experienced everything at FC Bayern,”
“So now I certainly reach a point where I have to answer certain questions to myself: ‘What goals do I have that I did not reach yet? Do I want to prove myself always at the same club and always under the same circumstances?'”
“This is a question of personal challenges. It is not about classical career questions, but about questions for your life.
“Those are the questions that drive you on as a human being.”
The Red Devils are all set to finish as the runners-up in the Premier League and find themselves in the second spot of the league table with a tally of 74 points in 34 matches. They have also managed to make it to the final of the FA Cup where they will face off against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea next month.
The addition of Boateng will undoubtedly bolster Jose Mourinho’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign. Manchester United have the likes of Phil Jones, Eric Bailey, Victor Lindelof, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling vying for a place in Mourinho’s senior squad. The potential acquisition of Boateng will definitely improve their squad significantly and add more competition for places in the Red Devils squad.

At 29, Boateng still has a few good years left in him which the Reds of Manchester could look to capitalise on, in the coming years. The German international is also versatile and can play in a number of different positions across the backline. Boateng primarily operates as a centre-back and can also be deployed in the right-back position which makes him a perfect fit for Mourinho’s United. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Boateng and whether he ends up plying his trade at Old Trafford next season.
