Manchester City have major plans for the summer transfer window, one of them being Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara. Pep Guardiola rates the midfielder highly and was almost the sole purpose of Thiago’s Barcelona-exit for the Bundesliga giants.
Maybe the 27-year-old will agree to another switch mostly due to the prospects of a reunion with his former mentor. Thiago is a regular starter in the Munich team and has carved out a major role under every manager who succeeded Guardiola.
Even Jupp Heynckes has developed an adoration for the Spanish international who’s creative abilities are second to none. Standing at 5 feet 8 inches, Thiago looks like he was born with the ball on his feet. Incredibly skilful and equally composed while formulating the team’s offence.
He takes on the holding midfield role with a lot of assertiveness and vigour and is almost the rightful successor for Xavi in the Spain national team. At 27, he has really come into the peak of his playing career and has found a close understanding of where goals come from (judging by the 7 he has netted this season alone).
Bayern are in the process of recollecting European glory but will have to take on the defending champions in the Semi-Final stage. They have undergone a tough transitional period right after the departure of Pep Guardiola.
Ever since the Spaniard left, Carlo Ancelotti has struggled to mesh with the team’s internal structures. He was fired after a string of poor displays and Heynckes had to be recalled from retirement.
The latter has been greatly honoured for winning the treble during the last season of his previous stint with Munich and a repetition is expected. Munich have already won the Bundesliga and the domestic cup and the midweek tie will be evident of where they stand.
They have a complete squad of developed professionals and losing Thiago can turn out to be major block in their future plans. It would eventually all depend on the player and the money City are prepared to splash for the occasion.
They too have been crowned as the league winners this season and are eager to continue their dominance to the next season. The best way to do that is to keep addressing the little leaks in the squad and having enough players to compete against the world’s best.

Guardiola is a manager whose game dictates heavy possession and a well-drilled offence. Thiago has been born and brought in that exact system when he can overlook at the Etihad. Maybe a serious approach needs to be made in the coming months to put the side over the top of their next-door rivals.
