Manchester City are eyeing a summer move for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara. According to recent reports, the Blues of Manchester are planning on making a swoop for the Spaniard’s services when the transfer window opens in the summer. City boss Pep Guardiola is eager to add to his squad in the off-season to try and maintain their dominance in domestic football while putting a better challenge in the Champions League.
It is believed that the Citizens are ready to spend big in the summer to acquire their top transfer targets. Thiago is amongst their prime targets in Guardiola’s shortlist of players for the summer and a reunion between the Spanish manager and the player looks set to be on the cards. The 27-year-old used to play under the guidance of Guardiola during their time at Barcelona which is why City could go all out to acquire his signature. With the impending departure of Yaya Toure and Fernandinho, the acquisition of Thiago could prove to be a major swoop for the Citizens.
The Spanish midfielder has made 25 appearances for the Catalans this season, scoring 7 goals while providing 3 assists in all competitions. He also has 27 international caps and 2 goals to his name for the Spanish national team and is in line to start for his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicks off later this year.
The new Premier League champions currently find themselves at the top of the league standings with a massive 16 point advantage going into the final few fixtures of the season. Guardiola’s men have already secured the League Cup earlier this year but their underwhelming performance in the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in this campaign will be a cause for concern. The Blues of Manchester are in need of some injection of quality this summer so that they can establish their dominance in both domestic and European football.
The addition of Thiago will undoubtedly bolster Guardiola’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign. City have the likes of Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne, İlkay Gündoğan and Phil Foden vying for a place in their first-team. The potential acquisition of Thiago will definitely add more competition for places in Guardiola’s squad.
