Manchester City entertained Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening looking to wrap up the Premier League title with a victory on the day. The Citizens began the match on the front foot and made the breakthrough in the 25th minute courtesy of their captain, Vincent Kompany’s header. The home side doubled their lead just five later when IIkay Gündogan scored with a smart finish from close range. Pep Guardiola’s men went into the half-time with a comfortable 2 goal advantage over their crosstown rivals.
The Red Devils began the second half in a rampant fashion and got a goal back in the 52nd minute via Paul Pogba and the Frenchman struck again just two minutes later when he found the back of the net with a well-placed header. United completed the turnaround in the 69th minute when Chris Smalling tapped home the winning goal from close range. Jose Mourinho’s side ran out 3-2 victors on the day to derail City’s title win for at least another gameweek.
Let’s take a look at how each Manchester City player performed during the contest.
GK: Ederson – 5/10
The Brazilian keeper conceded three goals during the contest and had a poor game in the City goal.
RB: Danilo – 4/10
He gave away silly fouls in the second half and failed to provide a spark going forward.
CB: Vincent Kompany – 6/10
He scored the opening goal of the game with an emphatic header but failed to cope with the United attack in the second half.
CB: Nicolás Otamendi – 5/10
The Argentine centre-back was caught sleeping while defending which paved the way for the Red Devils’ comeback.
LB: Fabian Delph – 5/10
The Englishman had a difficult time dealing with the threat of Sanchez in the second half.
CM: IIkay Gündogan – 6/10
He found the back of the net once but should have scored more goals to ensure a victory for his team. His missed chances allowed United a route back into the contest.
CM: Fernandinho – 5/10
The Brazilian had a poor game at the centre of the park. He was guilty of throwing away possession cheaply towards the latter stages of the match.
CAM: David Silva – 7/10
The Spaniard was by far, City’s best player on the pitch and did not deserve to end up on the losing team.
RM: Bernardo Silva – 6.5/10
He was a constant threat to the United defence and managed to create some wonderful chances for his teammates.
ST: Raheem Sterling – 3/10
The English speedster probably had his worst game in a City shirt. He was guilty of missing a number of great goal-scoring opportunities which ultimately ended up costing the home team dearly.
LM: Leroy Sané – 6/10
His delivery from a corner led to City’s opening goal. However, his impact on the game faded as the game went on.
Substitutes:
ST: Gabriel Jesus – 4/10
He came off the bench but lost his temper far too often which helped United get over the line.
ST: Sergio Aguero – 5/10
He hardly had any time to have an influence in the contest but still managed to get a header in which De Gea saved brilliantly to deny him.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne – 6/10
The Belgian kept the ball well after coming on but failed to deliver a decisive pass in the final third.
