Manchester City wrapped up the Premier League title last week as Manchester United lost to the bottom-placed West Brom. The title was never in doubt as they have been leading the title race for last few months. However, The Citizens were expected to do better in the Champions League as that is the trophy that has eluded them over the years.
They faced their League rivals Liverpool in the Quarter Finals and were touted as favourites to progress but Liverpool went through after an inspired first leg performance. They secured their place in the semi-finals as they went on to win 5-1 on aggregate. It is expected that The Citizens will be looking to reinforce in the summer to mount challenges on all front.
According to latest reports, John Stones, who made the big money switch from Everton to Manchester City, is being linked with the move away from the club. The English defender has found it tough to get into the first team after the Premier League Champions brought in Laporte in the January transfer window. Vincent Kompany has also resurrected his career after his injuries issues and as a result of all these, Stones has found it tough to break into the first eleven. The reports suggest that the defender is monitored by Liverpool and Arsenal and could be on his way out of the club.
If Stones is sold in the summer, Manchester City will be slightly thin on centre back options as Kompany is relatively injury prone and we look at three options which the 2017-18 Premier League Champions can go after-
Toby Alderweireld– The Belgian is a premier centreback option, which will be available in the market in the upcoming summer window as he hasn’t committed his future at his current club Tottenham Hotspur. His time with the London club has been plagued due to injuries and Pochettino recently acquired Davinson Sanchez who has gone on to become the first choice option at the back along with Jan Vertonghen.
Jonny Evans– The West Brom defender could be a shrewd buy in the transfer market as he isn’t going to cost a lot. West Brom are expected to go down in the Championship and they can end up selling few players as they won’t be getting financial benefits of playing in the Premier League anymore. The former United man is an experienced operator and could be a good buy for the current titleholders.
