Manchester United have already lined up replacements for Chris Smalling and Everton plans on picking up the centre-back for cheap. The 28-year-old has been questionable at the Red Devils backline this season but that would not deter the re-building Toffees team from picking up a Premier League winning defender.
Everton themselves have undergone a tough spell in England’s top-flight and at one point was even guilty of festering in relegation spots. Upon Sam Allardyce’s arrival, those mind-boggling concerns have been put to a rest but they have failed to progress further than the 8th spot of the points table.
Eliaquim Mangala was supposed to answer their defensive concerns but have been outright shambolic ever since his arrival to the Goodison. Farhad Moshiri is ready to spend big in the next transfer window as well and bringing in a veteran for a bargain price will be more than welcome.
The Toffees are looking to transcend themselves into European qualification status and are prepared to match strides with the Premier League elites to do so. They have already spent monstrous amounts in the past 2 transfer windows and improving upon the current campaign is key to their future plans.
They have already benefited from the arrival of Wayne Rooney who even at a ripe old age of 32 is one of the best players at the club. Smalling will fit the bill in terms of experience. His 31 England caps and 283 all-competition appearances for Manchester United is something that cannot be discounted especially for a side who are very vulnerable at the back.
Ashley Williams is still due to replicate his heroics from his Swansea days and Robert Holgate is still in the development phase. You cannot hand the latter a 38-game target and field him consistently in major fixtures.
Smalling’s downfall has been noted ever since Alex Ferguson made his way out of Old Trafford but the current season has been the eye-catching of them all. The Manchester derby was evident of all his shortcomings. His game reading ability have faded and so has his marking. Allowing Vincent Kompany to breeze past him is not the best look for a player who expects to travel to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
But then again he did make amends by scoring the winning goal with a header. A mix up of good and bad which has played into him getting selected over Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones in majority of the occasions.

However, Mourinho is not a person who gives his players a lot of second chances especially when his job is on the line. United will bring in a world-class option to field next to Eric Bailly and Everton will look to profit from the situation.
