Chelsea came into the match against Southampton knowing that they could not do anything about their Champions League spot unless teams above them drop points. They were, however, on hand to snatch a comeback 3-2 win against Southampton. Here is how the players performed on the night.
Thibaut Courtois 5
Could not do much about either goal and was quiet for the rest of the match. He was sloppy with his passing.
Cesar Azpilicueta 5.5
One of those rare days where Azpi failed to turn up. It was probably just the result of being tired of playing a long season where he has played almost every match. He was slow against Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic ran circles past him on occasions. You can expect him to come out charging tomorrow.
Andreas Christensen 6
He was good in defence and did well to fight against Shane Long’s speed. He was cool and had good composure but needs to be more dominant in certain matches.
Gary Cahill 5
Just like Alonso, he was at fault for the second goal. He let his man through and this kind of defending is exactly what has cost him his place not only in the team but also in the England squad. He needs to either improve or change clubs.
Davide Zappacosta 3.5
He was absolutely abysmal and failed to do anything throughout the match. A complete defensive liability he needs to be trained how to track back and not leave his man unmarked on the overlap runs.
Cesc Fabregas 6.5
One of the better players for the Blues. As always, his passing was on point and he was ready to break down the defence with his slick range of passes. He was the man who orchestrated attacks.
N’Golo Kante 7
An exceptionally talented midfielder who can do little wrong. He was once again at the top of the midfield battle and everywhere at once tackling, intercepting and playing impeccably well.
Marcos Alonso 5.5
Excellent cross from him to help Giroud get his first goal but he should not have been on the pitch in the first place. His horrific tackle on Shane long deserves retrospective action.
Willian 6
Excellent cross to help Hazard drive through the second goal. He was a constant threat.
Eden Hazard 6.5
A brilliant first touch and amazing finish for the second goal from the Belgian. Did not much otherwise in the match.
Alvaro Morata 3
He was ineffective and redundant once again and got frustrated too easily showing that he is not ready for the league.
Substitutes
Olivier Giroud 9
The most effective sub in the world. He was on hand to save the day for the Blues.
Pedro 5.5
Came in to add more energy and helped his team get better of the home side.
