Chelsea have flattered to deceive this season and there is no denying that. Under the tutelage of Antonio Conte, the Blues clinched the Premier League title last season but their title defence has been in tatters. Manchester City have been ruthless in the English top flight this season and Conte’s men have hardly offered any sort of resistance to Pep Guardiola’s men.
The London based outfit are currently placed at the 5th spot in the league standings with 60 points to their name from 33 games. They are trailing 4th placed side, Tottenham Hotspur, by 7 points and it is hard to imagine the defending league champions making to the Champions League next season. Their squad needs to be addressed in the summer as reinforcements are definitely needed.
As per one of the latest reports by the Mirror, the Pensioners are keeping close tabs on Brazilians sensation, Eder Militao. Militao has attracted a lot of attention from some of the heavyweights of the English top flight, including Manchester City and Manchester United, and thus, a tug of war is expected to be seen in the summer for securing his signature.
The 20-year-old emerged through the youth ranks of Sao Paulo and has his versatility is unarguably one of his strongest suits. He is capable enough to ply his trade as the defensive midfielder, centre-back as well as a right-back and no wonder why he is valued at £20million. Militao has featured for the Brazilian Under-17 sides on a few occasions and is one of the hottest properties in Brazilian football at the moment.
He is good in the air, reads the attacking endeavours of the opposition in a commendable fashion and is a competent tackler and interceptor. Despite being a starlet, he has shown immense maturity and calmness and should develop further in the coming seasons under proper guidance. Militao can replace the likes of Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko and David Luiz next season as these three have flattered to deceive this season.
However, signing youngsters come with inherent risks as well. He is unfamiliar with English football and given the animosity that it offers, it would not be easy for him to find his feet. Besides, Chelsea have hardly given adequate chances to thrive to the youngsters they have had at their disposal in recent seasons and signing an unproven commodity like Militao might not be enough to mount a better challenge for glories next season.
