Aston Villa are keeping tabs on the situation of Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson ahead of the summer transfer window. According to recent reports, the Villans are looking to make a swoop for the English shot-stopper’s services when the transfer window opens in the summer. The 21-year-old goalkeeper has put in some solid displays while on loan at League One promotion hopefuls Shrewsbury Town which has alerted a number of clubs that includes Aston Villa and Premier League heavyweights, Arsenal.
Some sources are now claiming that the English keeper wants to depart Old Trafford at the end of the current season in search of regular first-team football. However, it is believed that the Red Devils will make one last attempt to retain his services by offering him a new contract. It will now be up to Henderson to make a decision on his future in the off-season.
Henderson made a switch to Manchester United as a 14-year-old after playing for six years at the Carlisle United academy. He has also represented the England national team at various youth levels but is yet to feature in Jose Mourinho’s first-team. The Whitehaven-born keeper is currently out on loan at Shrewsbury Town until the end of the campaign. He has also had previous loan spells at Stockport County and Grimsby Town.
Aston Villa are currently in the 4th position in the Skybet Championship standings and are well on their way to secure a playoff spot at the end of the season. However, Steve Bruce could look to finish the regular season strong and push his players to clinch the 3rd spot which is currently being occupied by Fulham, who are just two points above them. A promotion to the Premier League this season will definitely boost their chances of securing the services of Henderson as the lure of regular football in England’s top-flight might turn out to be a major selling point which the player could find hard to refuse.
The addition of Henderson will undoubtedly bolster Steve Bruce’s goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign. Villa have the likes of Sam Johnstone, Jed Steer and Mark Bunn vying for a place in Bruce’s senior squad. The potential signing of Henderson will definitely strengthen their squad and add more competition for places in the Villans squad.
The English keeper has featured in 38 matches for Shrewsbury Town this season, conceding just 27 goals while keeping 16 clean sheets in all competitions. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Henderson and whether he ends up making a switch to Villa Park in the near future.
