The true hallmark of a great manager is the legacy he leaves behind. When Arsenal appointed Arsene Wenger, the Gunners had little idea of the revolution the Frenchman was about to bring in. Two decades later the Arsenal boss is ready to call it quits but has surely left his impression on the club.
He gave the club numerous trophies, an unbeaten domestic season and some wonderful, attacking football to witness. However, trophies are a reminder of past glory and the attacking football played under Wenger can change substantially under their new boss. What Wenger brought in and promises to remain is his ability to inject young talent into the first team.
Throughout his tenure, he has constantly been in favour of bringing in young talents. Ask the Jack Wilsheres and the Cesc Fabregases. He has involved around him a trusted group of scouts who have aided him perfectly. Spaniard Francis Cagigao and German Sven Mislintat have done an excellent job. Cagigao is the head of international recruitment while Mislintat is the new chief scout. Cagigao is known for his decision to convince Wenger to bring in Cesc Fabregas and also persuading Alexis Sanchez to join Arsenal.
With Wenger now set to retire, it would have seemed that the system he put in place might be coming to an end as well. However, Mislintat and Cagigao have no intentions of letting up with the duo now working on scouting Swiss playmaker Djibril Sow.
The 21-year-old played on loan at Germany recently and it is believed that Mislintat used his connections there to set up his initial tap on the midfielder. Sow came into limelight recently after a fiery volley and many clubs are now taking a look at the Young Boys playmaker.
Arsenal are keen on bringing him in next season as the Gunners still continue to search for a new manager to replace Wenger. However, even though the player looks like a promising future star, he still has a long way to go before he will have proven himself to earn a move to Arsenal.
Moreover, at the Emirates, a new manager will be coming in. While bringing in a new player is always a good sign, the club must align itself with the pattern of the new boss’ methods before buying players who might or might not turn out to be future stars. Maybe, the best thing for Arsenal to do would be to delve their energy into finding the best suitable replacement for Wenger first and then work with the new boss to further develop their scouting and youth system.
