Rangers on-loan defender Russell Martin is coming to the end of his loan spell at the club. The 32-year-old defender is on loan at the Ibrox from Norwich City and has played an important part in Rangers’ campaign this season. He is set to return to Norwich where he has another year left on his contract.
Prior to the big match at Celtic where they were thrashed 5-0, Martin had a whole different day planned in his mind. However, as it turned out, they ended up losing, rather badly. Martin has only a few weeks left at the club and he will be worried about his future.
The heavy defeat has now been inflicted and with Rangers looking set to make changes, Martin is unlikely to have his contract extended. With Norwich also unlikely to follow up on him, he will need to find himself a new club. Here are three options he can consider to make a move to.
Sunderland
The Black Cats are at the wrong end of a never-ending spiral. The Sunderland team which got relegated from the top tier of English football last year have now suffered yet another unfortunate but impending relegation and will now be playing their football in League One next season. They will lose even more players and will need to realign their defence. They might want to take a look at Martin who could be an experienced choice at the back.
Southampton
The Saints are on the brink of relegation and facing the prospect of second-tier football. They never quite recovered from their loss of Virgil Van Dijk and are set to lose more players if they suffer relegation. Should the club move down, they will need cheaper but experienced alternatives thereby making Martin a decent choice at the back.
West Brom
Placed 20th in the league, they are surely going to go down to second tier football come May. They will be on the verge of losing their star defenders like Craig Dawson, Ahmed Hegazi and most importantly Jonny Evans. This would mean that their entire backline would need reshaping and hence cheap alternatives like Martin should be considered for buffing up the squad size once again.
