West Brom have set an asking price of £16.5m for their Venezuelan forward, Salomon Rondon. Premier League teams are prying around for the 28-year-old’s signature, waiting for the inevitable relegation drop.
With 5 games left in the regular season, Albion have registered just 20 points to their name and are 10 points adrift from safety. The 28-year-old is one of their best players with 8 goals this season and would not be too keen on playing in the second division of English football next season.
A drop to the lower division will bring a bout of financial insecurity, which will be hard to handle with every player on the payroll. While some will be offloaded, the Baggies will have to find cheaper options in the next summer window.
He has managed to rack up 26 goals for Albion in 113 total appearances and was a big name to come out of Zenit St. Petersburg. He has been capped 66 times for his country and is the first Venezuelan player to score in three different tournaments on the international stage.
The 28-year-old is at the stage of his career where his athletic abilities have not escaped him and his experience in top-flight football is significant. It would not be an oversight to play for a more ambitious future if elite teams show an interest towards him.
Here are a few clubs who could greatly benefit from Rondon’s services.
Dwight Gayle has failed to carry over his previous season form into the Premier League this campaign. He has scored just 5 times in 29 League appearances and this costing Rafael Benitez’s side in their survival battle. Islam Slimani has yet to make an impact for the Magpies and will probably return to Leicester City after his loan spell runs out, come May.
Rondon could fill up the gaps and could fit perfectly with Gayle and Ayoze Perez next to him. His strength and scoring pedigree will definitely bring the team closer to a top half finish, rather than hanging on the relegation battle for another season.
Roy Hodgson has been forced to spend big in the January window on Alexander Sorloth and by far the return on their investments have been questionable. Obviously, Christian Benteke’s shambolic run of form in front of the goal has not helped the situation. Rondon could finally address their problems but only if the Eagles manage to save themselves from relegation.
