Tottenham Hotspur are interested in securing the signature of Southampton right-back Cedric Soares this summer. According to recent reports, Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs are lining up a move for the Portuguese international when the transfer window opens in the summer. The North London outfit could be looking to undergo a summer overhaul of their squad after failing to challenge in the top tier of English football this season. They are eager to make some quality acquisitions in this summer transfer period to try and end their recent trophy drought in the next campaign.
Some sources have recently claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on the situation of Soares at the St. Mary’s Stadium and could make a move for him in the off-season. The Saints are likely to suffer the agony of relegation at the end of the campaign which could pave the way for Spurs to land the player ahead of the new campaign. It is believed that he is one of the players that the South-coast club could be looking to off-load this summer as they prepare for life in the Championship.
Soares has made 32 appearances for the Saints this season, scoring one goal while grabbing two assists across all competitions. The Portuguese defender will definitely improve Spurs’ squad depth. However, he won’t be an upgrade over Tottenham’s current options at right-back which includes Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier.
The Saints have a tally of 29 points after Gameweek 34 and find themselves in the 18th position of the league table, just four points away from safety. They still have a slim hope of survival going into the final few fixtures of the campaign.
The departure of Soares could leave them significantly depleted, especially if they get relegated to the Championship. However, they could try to use the money generated from his sale to search for other options at right-back. The Portuguese full-back has struggled to put in consistent performances during the course of this season which is one of the many reasons why Southampton have performed so badly in the English top-flight this term.

Soares has a wealth of experience at the international level while playing for the Portuguese national team. He has 26 international caps for Portugal and is currently on course to take part in the 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicks off later this year. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Soares and whether he ends up leaving the South-coast in favour of a move to North London this summer.
