Liverpool are keen on securing the signature of Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak this summer. According to recent reports, the Reds are preparing to make an offer for the La Liga goalkeeper when the transfer window opens in the summer. However, it is understood that Jurgen Klopp’s side would be required to meet his whopping €100m release clause to bring him to Merseyside.
Some sources have recently claimed that Atletico Madrid are not willing to offer him a new deal to extend his stay at the club which means that the Reds can pounce on his services this summer. The La Liga outfit are hoping that his release clause won’t be met by any of his potential suitors. The Slovenia international signed for Atletico Madrid after sealing a move from Benfica in the summer of 2014. Oblak has put in some sensational displays for the Galacticos over the last few campaigns and is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in European football.
The Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has backed Loris Karius as his new no. 1 goalkeeper at Anfield for the time being but he could look to bolster his goalkeeping options in the summer transfer period to help his side close the gap to Manchester City in the Premier League. Oblak’s current deal with the La Liga outfit runs out in the summer of 2021.
Liverpool are currently occupying the 3rd spot in the Premier League rankings with a tally of 71 points after Gameweek 35. They secured a memorable 5-2 victory versus AS Roma in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final tie at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The potential acquisition of Oblak will definitely bolster Klopp’s goalkeeping options ahead of the new season. The Reds have the likes of Loris Karius, Simon Mignolet and Danny Ward vying for a place in Klopp’s first eleven. The acquisition of Oblak will undoubtedly improve their squad significantly and add more competition for places within the Reds team.

The Slovenia international has made 43 appearances for Atletico Madrid this season, conceding 23 goals while keeping 26 clean sheets in all competitions. At 25, Oblak still has his peak years ahead of him which the Merseyside outfit could look to utilise in the coming campaigns. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Oblak and whether he ends up making a switch to the Merseyside giants in the near future.
