Wolves midfielder Connor Ronan is on the cards of Portsmouth according to reports. Portsmouth currently have the player on loan since January and he has been excellent for them. He has played some exciting football prompting the Pompey coach to admit that they want to keep him for next year as well. This is what he had to say.
Jackett said: ‘He’s a player we’re obviously interested in. ‘It’s not something we’ve discussed, but for Wolves, they aren’t going to necessarily commit to it. ‘Generally, they get all of their players back in pre-season and assess their options then. ‘He’s been looking for the break to get into first-team football. He was slightly frustrated if pleased to be at a club going in the right direction in Wolves.
‘You want to be there or thereabouts with the first team and, as a young player, make a mark. ‘He’s happy and pleased for us taking the chance on him with limited league experience. For him, Wolves are in the driving seat but I’m sure he’ll be open to it (a return next season).’ Jackett explained there have been no discussions with Wolves over Ronan, but he feels they will be pleased with how his loan has gone. He said: ‘They’ll be happy he’s with us and played the games. He’s either started or come on as a sub in the majority of games.
‘That’s good for him because over the past couple of seasons, although he’s been with the first-team group, he hasn’t played many games. It’s been a good spell for him and we do think he’s helped us.’
Despite having shown such interest, Jackett understands that the matter remains in the hands of Wolves to decide the player’s future who will have another year left on his contract at the end of the current season.
With the Championship trophy expected to head their way, Wolves looked busy in the market with their owners ready to splash the cash to bring in quality players to their squad.
Although they can continue to buy players next season as well after qualifying for the English Premier League, one legal loophole which the Wolves side will be keen to take advantage of is the absence of the Financial Fair Play rules in the Championships. It means they can buy any player they want now without having to worry about their balancing their books, something they will not find easy if they qualify for England’s premier league competition next season, especially given the teams they will be competing against. It is this essential factor that made this January transfer window absolutely crucial for Wolves.
This would mean that from a business point of view, selling Ronan would be a good idea. They would be able to use the money from the sale of Ronan in the summer as they can then use it to balance the FFP thereby allowing them to buy more players.
