Hull City goalkeeper, Allan McGregor has expressed his interests in returning to his home country, Scotland and finishing off his career. At 36, he is still the number one shot-stopper for the Tigers and was previously linked with Chelsea – a shocking revelation but a rumour nonetheless.
McGregor’s contract is set to run out in the summer and talks of an extension have not been raised by the club. The player himself is not optimistic about a new deal, which would mean for him to find a new home.
When asked about his future with Hull, McGregor said, “I talked to them in July about it and they said, ‘Get the transfer window out the road’ and then we talked after the summer transfer window had closed and they said speak after January. Now we’re in March, so… But it’s not affected me. What’s going to happen is going to happen. You’re probably used to it here, to be honest.”
Even at such a late juncture of his playing career, McGregor has refused to show signs of slowing down. He has been named for Alex McLeish’s Scotland squad and is expected to make an appearance in the next two friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary.
“I don’t feel any different than I was five, 10 years ago. Obviously, it’s going to hit you at one point, but I can’t see it being in the near future, hopefully. I’m not really thinking about long-term, just thinking about these games coming up and trying to do your best. I feel good for my age. I wouldn’t say I feel old. It’s just a number, age. It’s good to be back.”
McGregor started his professional career with Scottish Premiership outfit, Rangers FC and went on to make 250 appearances. He has been capped at international level 35 times and appeared in between the sticks for Turkish club, Besiktas.
The veteran shot-stopper has travelled everywhere and played in almost every major honour in top-flight football. He has helped the Gers progress to the Quarter Finals of the 2008 UEFA Super Cup after beating out SV Werder Bremen in the 4th round.
It was only due to Rangers’ financial issues that McGregor was sold off to Besiktas. Hearts are set to lose the services of their current number one goalkeeper, Jon McLaughlin. They are the most likely to land the Edinburgh-born player but competition from other sides is expected to chime in.
