Tottenham Hotspur are looking to secure the services of Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot next summer. According to recent reports, Spurs are said to be among a whole host of clubs looking to land the English youngster. The 18-year-old has put in some eye-catching displays for the League Two side and has become an integral member of the Stevenage backline.
The North Londoners were previously linked with a move for the teenage starlet during the January transfer window, but a move failed to materialise back then. However, Wilmot now looks set to depart Broadhall Way next summer with Spurs ready to pounce on his signature.
Tottenham is set to battle with Watford and Arsenal in pursuit of the Wilmot’s signature. Stevenage chairman, Phil Wallace, has already confirmed reports linking some of the club’s top young talents with a move to the Premier League. In an official interview with the club’s website back in January, Wallace was quoted to have said,
“Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Burnley, Watford, Brighton, Bournemouth and West Brom have all registered interest.
“Our response to every call is the same – we want to continue improving g our lads, so we can get the right deal for the club and the right deal for the player. That is not likely to be achieved by leaving us at the first sign of interest.
“We are flattered by interest from so many Premier League clubs for our young players, but we want to continue to develop an improving them here for as long as possible.”
The 18-year-old has featured in 14 matches for the Hertfordshire outfit this season and has an assist to his name as well. He has immense potential and would undoubtedly bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s defensive options in the near future.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are currently in 4th place in the Premier League standings, just five points in front of fifth-placed Chelsea with just 9 league games remaining this term. They secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory at home courtesy of a Heung-Min Son brace versus Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
However, Spurs are still a staggering 20 points behind the league leaders Manchester City and are in need dire need to bring in some fresh faces next summer to help them in their quest of bridging the gap between themselves and the Manchester clubs in the coming years.
The addition of Wilmot fits the bill perfectly as Spurs try to build for a bigger and brighter future. He has a lot of potential which he can fulfil under the expert guidance of Mauricio Pochettino in the coming years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Wilmot and whether the North Londoners are able to fend off stiff competition in pursuit of his signature.
