Tottenham Hotspur are currently monitoring one of the hottest prospects in the Bundesliga – Benjamin Pavard. The 21-year-old has established himself as a first-team regular and has helped VfB Stuttgart adjust to life in top-flight German football.
He is already a crowd favourite in the Mercedes-Benz Arena and the club’s sporting director, Michael Reschke wasted no time in warning off potential suitors.
“We are the ideal club for him right now and he feels that. If in the future, a club from Europe’s top 10 shows real interest, we’ll sit down. Benjamin and his agent are aware of it. But, if this summer a club believes they can sign him for €30m, this club is profoundly wrong. We wouldn’t even open the door for such a talk.”
Pavard made the switch to The Swabians in the summer of 2016 from Ligue 1 side, Lille and has already appeared in 49 games for the club while adding 2 goals and 2 assists to his books. His versatile ability to appear in any position on the defensive end earned him high praise from critics and pundits.
He has helped his newly-promoted team to the 10th spot of the points table by collecting 13 points in the last 5 league games and winning 74% of his tackles. His passing ability is also measured up against some of the best defenders in the league with an 84% accuracy.
The club manager, Tayfun Korkut has utilised Pavard in almost every position in the backline and the 21-year-old has proved his worth every time. It was only a matter of time before a call-up from the national team would come in and in November 2017, it did.
The Maubeuge-born player made his debut for his country against Wales when Djibril Sidibe was serving a spell on the sidelines with injury. The 2018 FIFA World Cup is right around the corner and Pavard’s selection looks highly likely at the moment.
Be able to sign Pavard seems like a no-brainer for almost any team out there but then again, would a transfer be the ideal move at this point of his career? Even though Mauricio Pochettino is known for his intent to build a squad around young players, Pavard might not get the similar form of treatment he is receiving at the moment with Stuttgart.
The Argentine manager already has Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld in the squad who are all contending for first-team spots themselves. The move would only make sense if one of them make a club exit after this season.
